What Are Wool Jute Kilims?
A kilim is an area rug which does not have a pile and is traditionally made flatweave. We see them mostly in geometric designs. When made from a mix of wool and jute kilims take on a more textural element and greater durability which in turn presents a very natural beautiful piece that also has practical use.
Wool provides softness, insulation, and a sheen.
Jute is strong, structured, and has an earthy quality.
Cozy in a rough way, at the same time very put together.
The Hand Weaving Process
The creation of a wool jute kilim is a detailed and symbolic process which at Casavani Homes we do thus:.
1. Material Procurement.
Raw jute is harvested, cleaned, and turned into strong yarns. Wool which is often dyed with natural pigments is carded and spun into soft pliable threads. We choose and source both materials for high quality and sustainability.
2. Creating the design.
Each weaver starts with a traditional or modern design which may include tribal motifs, geometric patterns or minimalist color blocks. These patterns serve as a guide.
3. Hand weaving at the loom.
Using a handloom artisans weave wool and jute fibers together with a weft faced technique which in turn puts the weft yarns over the warp threads which is a characteristic of this method producing a compact wide flat weave. The wool is used for decorative weft which also brings in color into the design, jute on the other hand gives the fabric it’s structure in both the warp and weft.
4. Fine Tuning.
Once the weaving is done the kilim is taken off the loom at which point the edges are finished with braided or knotted work and then the whole rug is hand washed and left out in the sun to improve it’s texture and tone.
